Navigating the differences between MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5

The trading platform they utilize is a choice for forex traders. However, as not every broker offers every sort of trading platform, this decision is tied to the choice of Forex broker.

Furthermore, some brokers provide access to specific Forex trading platforms even though they are not truly compatible with them. Instead, they use a bridge, which is a piece of software that links the platform with the dealing system of the broker.

This may perform effectively, but if the bridge has issues or is slow, it may have a negative impact on trade execution and management.

The trading platform known as Metatrader 4 is widely used and is unquestionably considered to be the industry standard. Despite the possibility of somewhat higher spreads and/or costs, I have never met a Forex broker who does not either offer trading directly through the platform or through an internal bridge to the platform.

Although it is made by the same business and is somewhat less popular, the Metatrader 5 trading platform is still available (the Cyprus-based MetaQuotes Software Corporation). We must examine the platform in more detail if we are to see why this is the case.

What is MetaTrader 5?

 MetaTrader 5

There is a common misconception that Metatrader 5 was a new improved version of Metatrader 4, designed to do the same job better. This misapprehension arises from the fact that Metatrader 5 was released in 2010, five years after the release of Metatrader 4 and at a time when Metatrader 4 was already very popular.

Although it is a trading platform and back testing tool exactly like Metatrader 4 is, and the graphical user interfaces appear and feel quite comparable, this is not really the case. A good Metatrader review will mention this.

Because it is more easily able to connect to a centralized trading exchange, Metatrader 5 was effectively created to be able to trade markets other than Forex, such as stocks and commodities. The forex market is entirely decentralized, with a number of significant participants supplying liquidity at somewhat variable prices and in an ad hoc manner.

Before ownership can change hands with full legal force, stocks and commodities, the latter of which is traded primarily as a futures contract (in fact, numerous contracts with varying expiry dates), must typically be traded through a centralized mechanism.

It might be believed that Metaquotes anticipated a surge in retail stock and commodity trading at the time the MT5 was being developed and released and tailored the software to that market.

The Difference between MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5

It might be believed that Metaquotes anticipated a surge in retail stock and commodity trading at the time the MT5 was being developed and released and tailored the software to that market.

The programming language used by Metatrader 5 is MQL5, as compared to Metatrader 4’s MQL4. The appealing feature of MQL5 is that it supports “black box” programming, which, to put it simply, implies that it is simpler to code and, as a result, will naturally provide a better framework for users and creators of trading robots and other expert advisers.

There is no longer a difference between the platforms because MetaQuotes stretched this functionality into MQL4 in 2014. However, if the language is improved in the future, it is possible that MetaQuotes won’t extend any upgrades into MQL4 and MQL5.

There is no backwards compatibility, it should be emphasized. Metatrader 5 cannot run programs created with Metatrader 4. This can be a significant disadvantage for traders who want to “upgrade,” and it is one of the main reasons why a modification like this shouldn’t be viewed as an upgrade.

Indeed, Metatrader 5 still has two significant benefits over Metatrader 4 in terms of programming. First off, if you are the type of trader who needs to perform a lot of back tests, this program’s back testing functions, where you may test programmed trading strategies, execute at a considerably faster speed.

Back testing across many currencies is also possible. Combined, this can drastically speed up back testing processes.
